Lone Star Dispatch - Issue #4 - Writing Evaluation

Story 1 - Black History Month / Raising awareness with music, food, art and alliance

Who? - This article talks about the students and people all around the world who are negligent of the reasons/culture behind Black History Month. Written by Fuuad Ajaz.

What? - Black History Month and why it's important.

When? - In the month of February.

Where? - The holiday occurs all around the world, yet the problems are also all over the world.

Why? - Trying to get the awareness that the culture behind the reasons of Black History Month because some people don't even know the reasons behind it.

How? - By keeping the students and adults in our campus up-to-date and informed with both the present and history of Black History, then we can more appreciate the importance and significance that it has on the world.

Who was quoted? - Multiple people were quoted in the article. Their names are as follows; Joyce Brisco, Amanda Pfeiffer, Oluwaseyi and Oluwaseun Odufuye, Jeremy Faulkner, and Vicki Hebert.

What is the strongest quote? - I think the quote that stood out the most to me was the one located in the center of the article. "People should educate themselves black historians then they should get the importance of staying educated, the importance of unity, of being brave, and always standing up for your rights." - Oluwaseun Odufuye

Was the lead sentence what intrigued you to keep reading? - One thing that intrigued me to continue reading was the amount of information contained in the paragraph, and how it stood out to me amongst the other articles.

Story 2 - Principal search begins and ends here

Who? - This article talks about the search for the new principal, Mrs. Susan Leos, who is actually the intern/part-time principal we were going to have until we got our official one. Written by The Editorial.

What? - The article, as stated above, is about the search and find pf the new principal who was actually the intern-principal.

When? - When Mrs. Leos came to the school at the beginning of this school year, we all thought it would be temporary, but as stated in the strike published on February 10th of 2017, Mrs. Leos is the school's new principal.

Where? - The article's location is based here, at James Bowie High School of Austin, Texas.

Why? - The article may be considered important because if Mrs. Leos hadn't stepped in for the intern-principal job, we would have been without a temporary - not to mention permanent - principal for our school.

How? - As stated above, not having anybody in the principal's position for or school would have resulted in utter chaos, making this situation all the more positive in the hopes that she will actually do something beneficiary for the school.

Who was quoted? - There are no quotes in the article, therefore I cannot list any names quoted.

What is the strongest quote? - As stated above, there are no quotes to refer from, so I cannot list any.

Was the lead sentence what intrigued you to keep reading? - No, it was not the first/leading-sentence that kept me interested in the article, it was actually the combination of the first three 2-3 sentence paragraphs of the article.

Story 3 - Native Americans bring diversity into the community

Who? - The article is written about Native American transfer student Cody McDowell. Written by Shelby Kelly.

What? - The article talks about his family, differences between here and his old home.

When? - Cody had moved into the school near the beginning of the year, but the article was posted along with the issue on February 10th of 2017.

Where? - The articles subject is in Austin, so the location of the article is Austin, Texas.

Why? - The article brought this certain person up because the Native American community on our campus is rather small, and having a new addition to that group is worth a great deal for our school's diversity.

How? - The article brings up this topic in a casual way though I have taken it to be a light in the dark, or an elephant in the room, that shows us that most of our school's population is WHITE. This can effect our community and behaviors of the students around the school, so I believe we should honor people no matter of what religion or race they are. It should be equal all the same.

Who was quoted? - Multiple people were quoted. Their names are listed as follows; Cody McDowell, Emily McCullough, Ben Wheeler, and Bree Rolfe.

What is the strongest quote? - "I know a lot of people who are Native American, but as far as my knowledge and what I have been told I'm the only one of few, if not the only one, who's registered as Native American in AISD." - Cody McDowell.

Was the lead sentence what intrigued you to keep reading? - No, what actually intrigued me to see reading, was the title. After reading it, my attention was caught and I felt compelled to finish reading the article.

Front Pages of the World

My favorite newspaper front page out of all in the USA area would probably be the one to the right, the 'Daily Springfield Leader'. It caught my attention with the placement of the big picture and the creativity that it seems to show.

Believe it or not, my favorite headline isn't the one inside the picture "What's Going on with Real ID?" Mine is actually the one at the top, "Deportation Plan Unveiled". The reason this is my favorite headline is because I'm interested on how our government will try (most likely unable to succeed, however) to deport all illegal immigrants.

From what I can tell, the front page only goes into details about two stories, but the headline above the newspaper's name will count in my book as a story, so I'd say that there are three stories on the front page.

I notice that the spacing between the columns of text are the same for most newspapers, and most of the newspaper titles/names are located below the first headline, but are a larger text than any other on the page. Most front pages have a large main photograph to capture the attention of the reader as well.

Something I notice that's different between this front cover to others on the website, is that this one has a large photo to take up most of the space on the front page.

Extra Credit - Website Review and Rating

PetaPixel -

While looking over this website just from a quick glance over, you can that there's a lot going on, which could be resolved by simply having a more put together kind of stationary look. However, I like the way that the website is put together. Its purpose seems to be a type of blog/informational site that has links to articles all regarding photography styles or stories. When gathering these types of information, it's critical to get details correctly so that the articles get more links, but the hardest part would probably be the fact the ad-space is all over the place and taking up spots where more information to articles should be. Any average viewer interested in astonishing stories or breathtaking photograph styles would love this website, and it would be a great opportunity to add this to your bookmarks and recommend this website to a friend or family member that may be interested in the world of photography. I can say that I, myself, will add it to my 'Google Bookmarks' and will be recommending it to a fellow friend of photography when I get the chance. My overall rating of this website would definitely be a 4.5, with my only two problems about it being the cluttered header and too may ads covering the page.
Out of the many intriguing articles on this website, I believe that he most eye-catching one that caught my interest best, would have been the one about a Russian Model by the name of Viktoria Odinstova who is getting 'harshly criticized' because she was dangled willingly off a 1,000 tall skyscraper in Dubai for photoshoot without any permission, nor safety equipment to do such a thing. Not supposed to be allowed, she has been getting criticism and a few other people in her sponsoring pool took thought into if somebody with such a reckless spirit deserved the work that the com many had in store for her. This will definitely put a damper on her career and the possibility for her to have a good reputation for the rest of her modeling career. Though I believe that the photoshoot seemed to go well, she should have been more care and gotten the proper safety equipment just in case something went wrong. You can never be too careful. And in situation, I would rather look silly in a large amount of safety gear than to have none and slip to fall to my death unexpectedly.
