Sports Portfolio Analysis - Portfolio Notes
Part I.
Portfolio #1 - Video #2
a.) The photographer is Travis Haughton.
b.) The general focus of the portfolio is around sports and children, though Haughton may have gone a little overboard on the focus of children and lost focus that the idea of the portfolio was supposed to over sports photos.
c.) Three problems I found in the portfolio was; lack of quality, repetitive photographs containing children, and the overall lack of meaning to the majority of Haughton's photos.
d.) Two things that the judges did like was how the moment captured in some - though few - of Haughton's photos seemed more genuine and less staged. They also admired the professionalism of the few well-done photos.
e.) My overall impression of the photographer is that he needs to look for more meaning and direction behind his photos, meaning he should definitely try harder to concentrate on the prompt given. Also, he could work to improve his quality of his photos. However, one photo of his that I did like was of the little girl drawing the cross because of the meaning of her following her religion, though I disliked the quality and lack of meaning that were evident in the majority of his photos.

Portfolio #2 - Video #4
a.) The photographer of this portfolio was Jordan Murph.
b.) The main focus of the portfolio was around sports and the players.
c.) Three things that the judges did not like was; his work on the last two stories he covered, the lack of diversity and purpose behind his photos, and the uncertainty of who the subject exactly was in a few of the photos.
d.) Two things that the did like, despite the section above, was the good quality of the composition and lighting.
e.) What I got from looking over Murph's photographs in his portfolio was that he is good at capturing action shots, mostly sports photos, but lacks the characteristics or ability to cover stories in a series of photos. Murph may have a future in sports photography, and maybe in landscacpe photography, but he should stick to that.

Portfolio #3 - Video #6
a.) The photographer of this portfolio is Sam Adams.
b.) The general focus of the portfolio is a story over biking and biking races.
c.) Three things that the judges did not like or approve of was; the lack of action in some - though not many - of his photos, the lack of quality, as well as the lack of meaning captured in those few bad shots.
d.) Two things that the judges did like, however, was the lighting of the photographs, as well as the silhouettes made in a few of those photographs.
e.) My overall impression of Adams' photography style is surprisingly negative. In my opinion, the only thing I can find that was good about Adams' photographs were the silhouette photos. Somehow, a photo that can be hard to get right - He got right. But photos that he tried to take that seem easy - He just didn't seem to get. If I had to decide the next part of Adams' career as a photographer, I probably wouldn't hire him and tell him he needs to look for another career.

a.) The photographer of this portfolio is actually the first girl's I've seen - Melissa Golden.
b.) The general focusPof the portfolio is "Nature, Family and Elders" not exactly over sports and such, but still well-captured.
c.) Three things that the judges did not like was; the quality of a few of the photos, the lack of meaning in said photos, and the uncertainty of the subject in a great majority of the photos.
d.) Two things they did like were her gecko photo and the portrait's of the old man.
e.) I don't have much to say about Golden's photos other than it seems like some of them were rushed or staged so that she could try to get a feel of a good moment, but it didn't seem to work out. However, she is good at her nature photos and her portraits, further proving my favorites as her gecko photo and portrait of the old man.

Part II.
a.) On the Photo-of-the-Year Review over the winner, Dustin Snipes' photographs and portfolio, Two big things that the judges did enjoy were the quality and depth of the photographs.
b.) I see that his strengths as a photographer are color, composition, and choice of framing. However, a weakness of his is capturing a quick moment shot.

Part III.
a.) The process of choosing a winner is done by multiple - almost hundreds - of candidates sending their photos in, then the judges slowly work their way through, bookmarking the best/better photographers over and over again until they reach a small handful. Once that small handful is reached, they make notes on which photographs are the most powerful, the most intense, the most meaningful. After they have narrowed it down even further, they can decide which photo out of the remaining it the best.

Merger Photo - Review (Q & A)
Using this photo, I answered the following questions;
1. Is there something you see in the photo above that could be a problem when you take your photos? Look carefully.
Answer - How the wind was blowing in one of the pictures, how she's not going anything in any of the photos, and how her shadow is at different places each time.
2. Where do you think would be a great place to take this type of picture here on the Bowie campus?
Answer - "The Pit" area of the courtyard would do just fine. That or sitting in the little garden area between the main office and the academic hall.
3. Can you think of something creative to actually DO in the photo when you take yours?
Answer - I could be playing frisbee and hanging out in multiple spots in the pit.
4. Is there something you could wear that could help you when you take this photo?
Answer - Athletic clothes would do just fine, or some jeans shorts and a short sleeved shirt.

HDR Photography Preview - Review for Friday (Q&A)
1. What manipulations to the camera will you need to make to create an HDR image?
Answer - We will need to adjust the Aperture, Shutter Speed, Exposure, and take a varying combination of photos with what we have.
2. What equipment will me use to take this type of image?
Answer - You will need a; Camera with an Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) function, Tripod, and HDR Photo-Blending Software.
3. What is the reason someone might want to take an HDR image?
Answer - To create a either high realistic or beautiful artwork-like photo that gathers the essence of beauty in an area, a beauty which you might not have recognized before.
4. What can we expect to happen with the images once we merge them together? What will we see that we might not have seen before with just one photo?
Answer - When you merge the images together, you will get a photo that wither looks like you are seeing it first-ands, or it will look like a piece of art. You might see the hidden beauty in the surroundings of the photo that you might not have noticed before, or you may even see the change in the composition/lighting as the photo draws you in more and more.

Final Exam Planning
For my Final Exam Project, I will shoot the assignment this upcoming week at my mom's work, downtown at ACL Live next to the "W Hotel". I will be documenting the workers - bartenders, managers, security, electricians, and IT's - as the set up for shows and ready the place for both the bands and the public. I will need transportation (provided by my mom), and my camera. The video portion of this will be during the setup, a fast-forward of the Backline Crew setting up an preparing the instruments and equipment for the band. The images will the images will be before and after the fast-forwarded video in the middle. And lastly, my narration will be overlapping the three sections during the -4 minute period, with a little bit of underlying music.
